AI tour guide apps vs curated audio tours: how to choose
There are four common ways to explore a city on foot without hiring a private guide. Each is good at something different. This page compares them honestly, including where TourLore, an AI tour guide app, isn't the best fit.
Four ways to tour a city on foot
AI-written audio tours (TourLore's approach)
- How it works
- An app writes the route and the narration when you ask for it, from map and encyclopedia data plus an AI model, tuned to your interests and your time.
- Where it wins
- Any city or town, including places nobody has written a tour for. A route built around what you like, changes mid-walk, and narration in your language.
- Where it falls short
- No human editor checks each tour before you hear it, so facts can be wrong, and data is thinner in small places. The narrator is a synthetic voice, not an author or an actor.
Curated audio tours
- How it works
- People write and record a fixed tour in advance, and you download it. VoiceMap, for example, says its tours are “produced by historians, podcasters, novelists, chefs, experienced guides, and passionate locals,” working with in-house editors and sound engineers, with “audio that plays automatically at the right time and place.”
- Where it wins
- An authored story in a real voice, edited before release, with production and sound design an AI-written tour doesn't match.
- Where it falls short
- They exist only where someone has made one, and the route and the themes are the same for every listener.
Live guided walking tours
- How it works
- A local guide leads a group along a planned route at a set time.
- Where it wins
- A person who can answer anything, read the group, and share local knowledge no dataset has. The best choice when you want conversation and company.
- Where it falls short
- A fixed time and route, a pace set for the group, and topics chosen for everyone at once.
Guidebooks and maps
- How it works
- You plan your own route from a guidebook, travel blogs, or a maps app.
- Where it wins
- Full control, often free, and a good guidebook is carefully researched and edited.
- Where it falls short
- You do the planning and the reading yourself, and nothing narrates while you walk.
How to choose
- Want a polished story from a known storyteller, in a city that has one? A curated audio tour is hard to beat.
- Want to ask a person questions and meet other travelers? Book a live guide.
- Going somewhere with no tours, or want a route built around your own interests and time? That's what AI-written tours are for.
- Prefer to plan every step yourself? A guidebook and a maps app still work.
Where TourLore fits, and where it doesn't
TourLore writes a self-guided audio walking tour for any city, tuned to you, in 30 languages, and works offline once the tour is downloaded. It plans multi-day trips and re-plans mid-walk.
It isn't a substitute for a great human storyteller or a live guide, and it doesn't book anything. It's also pre-launch: the apps aren't available yet.
